What Makes Glow-in-the-Dark Lashes Shine?

Thanks to a process called phosphorescence, your shiny new glow-in-the-dark eyelashes contain a unique substance called phosphor, which emits light after being energized through light. This means you will need to allow your lashes to soak up light throughout the day for them to be ready for a festive evening. Natural or artificial light both work; however, natural sunlight is the most effective. 

When you rock your new lashes around town or at home, the atoms inside the phosphors get excited from exposure to an external source of energy (light). In their excited state, these atoms can radiate light as they return to their neutral energy level. 

The more excited the atoms, the longer the period it takes for them to spend their energy and return to a neutral level. If that was too much science, here’s the SparkNotes version — the longer you charge your lashes before use, the longer they will glow.

The most important thing to remember when prepping to rock a vivid glow-in-the-dark lash is that they do not glow in just any environment. Even when charged in light throughout the day, phosphorescent fibers require UV or black light to show off their brilliant shine. This is because the phosphors convert UV radiation from black light into visible light.
